Lest We Forget, Part 2

Scripture:

Speaker: Pastor Miguel Betancourt II

Series: Memorial Day

Synopsis: "Lest We Forget" holds significance for us in a patriotic sense and also in a spiritual sense. How significant it is that when admonishing Israel to teach their children diligently "these words," that the first words out of God's mouth were regarding His own nature: what kind of God He is. If verse five presents to us the imperative of wholehearted devotion to God, v. 4 declares the logic for that devotion. Solid Bible doctrine provides the "why" behind the "what"; the reason behind the requirement. Once God's nature is clearly understood (v. 4) and its truth impacts the heart, the consequent response will be an unreserved, unconditional devotion to Him (v. 5) that will be expressed by obedience to His commands (vv. 6-9). To fail to teach the words of God to the next generation is to ignore the warning of v. 12 - "lest thou forget."

They and many others have proven the truth of what Solomon said in Ecclesiastes - a man's prosperity and pleasure does not bring lasting satisfaction and fulfillment! Society has taught us what its definition of a prosperous life is, and it has deceived us. While prosperity has ruined a lot of people, it does not ruin the man who sees God as His greatest treasure! We must "learn from above how to live life below." Gaius is a great illustration of that!
