Changing Times
In these short eight verses, Solomon mentions "time" 28x's with reference to life's experiences. By way of a literary device, this partial list designates the totality of life's experiences. In the same passage, he mentions fourteen pairs of opposites. Again by way of literary device, he uses these polar expressions to designate the entirety of life. Solomon's point is clear: There is a determined time for everything. Life unfolds according to divine providence (everything from birth to death). This does not produce a belief in fatalism--quite the opposite. It brings us face to face with one of the most comforting and reassuring teachings of Scripture--God's sovereign control and providential arrangement of the circumstances of life to drive us towards Him and the enjoyment of Him. Two main lessons emerge from our text that bring security, stability and certainty to life, freeing us from the temptations to worry, fear or despair when facing an uncertain future.
