The apostle Peter ties all of what he says regarding the future dissolving of the current heavens and earth and the creation of a new heaven and earth to some intensely practical applications. If everything in this life is perishable, why live as if it will last forever? This world is not all that exists nor all that really matters, in spite of the fact some people live that way. The coming of a new heaven and a new earth drives our focus to God's nature and His work.
