In Psalm 40, David does two kinds of numbering: in v. 12, the innumerable troubles he is facing without and the innumerable sins within; and in v. 5, the innumerable expressions of God's works and thoughts and his behalf. We are very good at doing what David did in v. 12; we need to start practicing what David did in v. 5. Our circumstances must be seen in the light of God's goodness rather than in the darkness of self-pity. In other words, we must "measure every circumstance we face by what we know to be true about our God." Like David, we must grasp a sense of The Greatness of God's Goodness which inspires thanksgiving and praise - even in times of trouble.

In the first of two messages from Psalm 40, we look at two reasons why God's goodness is great.
